Obstetrics

Obstetrics is the science that deals with pregnancy and child birth. It treats problems that occur during pregnancy and also for the first 6 weeks after the baby is born. Women are checked during early pregnancy and ultrasound scans (USS) of the foetus are done to assess its stage of development and to ensure everything is well. This is called antenatal care where the mother is taken care of before she gives birth to the baby. Most women will be screened four times during their pregnancy, with four antenatal visits. Some pregnant women will be screened more often if they have a high risk of developing a problem (these include women who are older, diabetic or have had problems with babies previously).

Gynaecology

The gynaecology department is dedicated to treat problems related to the reproductive tract. This includes problems of the womb (uterus), menstrual problems such as severe pain or bleeding, cysts in/on the ovary and cancer of the women's reproductive tract – including cervix (neck of the womb), uterus (womb), ovaries etc.
